Our Volunteers

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization!

Our volunteers have a passion for animals and make a sincere commitment working to save and improve the lives of the homeless animals we serve.  Thank you to all of you who volunteer - we couldn't do it without you.  You really make a difference.

We have over 230 wonderful volunteers whom we hope to showcase here over time (however many of them are "animal people" and are notoriously camera shy!)

                                        2007 Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to our 2007 Volunteer of the Year, Gloria MacVane!  Gloria has been a dedicated and completely committed volunteer with the League for over a decade and has performed a variety of roles.  Just a few include: Saturday Adoption Counselor (specializing in our feline residents), foster Mom to literally hundreds of cats and kittens over the span of her volunteer career, spay/neuter surgery technician assistant, event committee volunteer (for many events), and ARL NH Planned Giving Ambassador.  Gloria is generous with her time, her talents and her treasure and is a true friend to everyone at the League.  Her love of animals and compassion for people make her a joy to have around the shelter and we are thrilled to celebrate her several hundred hours of volunteer       Gloria & NH Governor Lynch
work every year with this award.

Gloria is a resident of Bedford and in addition to her work with the League, she volunteers for Red Cross blood drives and for the town of Bedford.

                                       2006 Volunteer of the Year

Our 2006 Volunteer of the year is Deanna Del Tergo.  Deanna is definitely one of the first to raise her hand for everything!  She has helped out at numerous off site events, staffed Petco Adoption Saturdays, and worked on all three major event committees in 2006 - the auction, the Gala dinner, and the PetStep.  Anyone who has ever worked on one of these event committees will recognize what an undertaking it is to take on three of them!  And that involvement didn't scare her - she signed up for the events again in 2007 and agreed to be the Vice Chair of this dinner tonight (which is the first time the League has ever offered a chair position to a non-board/staff member).

She has walked dogs, polishes off tedious paperwork, bakes for events, and worked many on-site events, as the art show, helps with our event marketing, and goes after event sponsors like crazy!  Of her own initiative, she got us involved in Macy's "Shop for a Cause" event where the League received money for tickets sold.

About "Volunteer of the Year"

Each year at our annual Gala Dinner, we recognize the Volunteer of the Year (VOTY).  We have so many wonderful volunteers, it can be hard to choose.  Following are the requirements for the VOTY:

  • The VOTY will be someone who is dedicated to the mission of the shelter.  They will be able to recognize and see the "Big Picture" and their work here will help to further our mission.
  • The VOTY is one of the first to raise their hand when help is needed.
  • The VOTY is willing to "do whatever is needed" and try new volunteer positions.
  • The VOTY gets along with others and recognizes the importance of the team.  The VOTY is among the top volunteers in regards to number of hours that are spent working for the ARL-NH, whether it is on-site or off-site.
  • The VOTY can be a new volunteer; years of volunteering is not necessarily a requirement, but it is a consideration.
